Julia Thorne is an American writer and former wife of Senator and Presidential candidate John Kerry. She was born on August 15, 1944 in New York City. Thorne is the daughter of a prominent New York City lawyer and a descendant of the politically influential Delano family.
Thorne attended Radcliffe College and later earned a Master's degree in English literature from Columbia University. She worked as a writer and editor for several publications, including New York magazine and The New York Times.
Thorne married John Kerry in 1970 and the couple had two daughters together before divorcing in 1988. Thorne went on to write several books, including a memoir titled "You Are Not Alone: Words of Experience and Hope for the Journey Through Depression," in which she candidly discusses her struggles with depression.
In addition to her writing, Thorne has been active in philanthropy and advocacy work, particularly in the areas of mental health awareness and women's issues. She has also worked as a teacher and lecturer at various universities.
